Q) What is your view regarding making Masah on Sealskinz socks. Do they
fulfil the sharii requirement of masah?
In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful
Assalaamu `alaykum waRahmatullahi Wabarakatoh
In order for it to be permissible to wipe on non-leather socks, it is imperative
to fulfil all the conditions of leather socks. After thoroughly studying
the inherent qualities of leather socks, our illustrious Fuqaha suggest that
non-leather socks should resemble leather socks in the following:
[Al Mabsoot lil Sarakhsi (1/18, 184 Dar al Fikr), Al Muheet al Burhani (1/343,
Al Majlis al Ilmi), Ahkam al Quran lil Jassaas (3/440, Dar al Kutub al Ilmiyyah),

We have personally examined ‘sealskinz’ socks and are satisfied that they fulfil
all the above-mentioned conditions. One can refer to their website to see the
full durability of these socks.
Hence, it is permissible to use ‘sealskinz’ socks as
leather socks and make masah on them.
And Allah knows best

Question:I was wondering whether
waterproof socks such as those made by SealSkinz (listed in the links below)
can be used as khuffain (i.e. wiped over).

Would my ibadah done in this state considered valid? Answer: Assalamu alaikum wa rahmatullah Yes, SealSkinz fulfill the conditions of valid footgear. I consulted Shaykh Adib Kallas of Damascus and other eminent Hanafi jurists on this matter. It is permitted to use alcohols (such as ethanol) for medical purposes. Asslamo Allaikum,
I hope in the Grace & Mercy of Allah (SWT) that this query reaches you in the best state of Health & Eeman. Do you agree with the esteemed opinion of Shaykh Faraz Rabbani who consulted with Shaykh Adib Kallas of Damascus and other eminent Hanafi jurists that Masah on SealSkinz (Non-Leather socks) is permissible? The full text and link to the Fatwa (reproduced above) is as follows: A:) In the name of Allah, Most Compassionate, Most Merciful Wa alaykum assalam Warahmatulah Dear Brother, Apologies for the delayed response to your letter. I have been extremely busy of late, hence was not in a position to reply earlier. I do hope you will forgive me, Insha Allah. After personally looking at (inspecting) socks made from SealSkinz, I can confirm that it is permitted to perform Masah on such socks, since they fulfil the basic conditions that are required in order for wiping (mash) to be allowed. And Allah knows best. Mufti Muhammad ibn Adam al-Kawthari Darul Iftaa Institute of Islamic Jurisprudence Question: What is the ruling of wiping on khuffs? When is it liked, when is it disliked, when is it other than that? Answer: In the Name of Allah, Most Merciful and Compassionate May Allah's blessings and peace be upon His Messenger Muhammad, his folk, companions, and followers. Walaikum assalam, One: Permissibility The position of the overwhelming majority of Islamic scholarship is that wiping over footgear (khuffs) is permitted without dislike. [Kasani, Bada'i` al-Sana'i`; Nawawi, al-Majmu` Sharh al-Muhadhdhab; Ibn Qudama, al-Mughni.] Ibn al-Mundhir actually states that, "There is no difference of opinion that wiping over khuffs is permitted." [Quoted by Ibn Qudama; it means that the contrary positions, such as that of the Shi`a, are considered aberrant (shadhdh).] Two: Preference It is the position of the majority of scholars that, while wiping on footgear is permitted without dislike, washing the feet has more reward. [Nawawi, al-Majmu`; Marhinani, al-Hidaya; Ibn al-Humam, Fath al-Qadir] The Hanbalis, however, disagreed and considered wiping on footgear superior to washing one's feet. [Buhuti, Kashshaf al-Qina`] The Hanbalis' reasoning for this is that: a) the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and his noble Companions (Allah be pleased with them) always sought to do that which was best, and they wiped; b) it constitutes being distinct from the people of innovation; c) Allah loves that His dispensations be taken. [ibid.] The answer of the majority of scholars is that: a) We do not deny that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and his Companions wiped on their footgear. However, what they did most of the time was to wash, which shows that it is best. b) Distinction from the people of innovation is achieved by wiping sometimes, or wiping in their presence. c) While Allah loves that His dispensations be taken, the very same hadiths tell us that Allah also loves that His resolutions (`aza'im) be followed. Thus, one takes the dispensations when there is need or hardship, and follows the way of resolution when there isn't. Three: Situations When Wiping is Better At the same time, the scholars mention it is better to wipe on footgear in certain circumstances, including: a) When one has doubts about the permissibility or non-dislikedness of wiping over footgear. b) When there is genuine hardship or harm feared in washing. c) When one displays the permissibility of wiping--such as in the presence of innovators or the ignorant (if there is benefit in doing so). d) When one is given to baseless misgivings, and wiping on footgear will be a means to dispel them. e) When one has very limited amounts of water, and wiping on footgear will enable one and others to perform ablutions rather than having to resort to dry ablution (tayammum). And Allah alone gives success. Faraz Rabbani.
Mufti Zubair Butt (ITC) http://www.itc-bradford.org/
Three brothers including the Ameer of Central-Mosque while visiting Mufti Zubair Butt showed the socks to him and after thorough examination and discussions with Maulana Abdur-Rahman Kayat (Ameer, ITC), Mufti Saheb (DB) also gave the opinion that Masah will be permissible on these socks. We are making this note public with the permission of Mufti Saheb and when his detailed Fatwa is received, we will Insha'Allah post it. Notes from
Central-Mosque Team: Certain Hanafi Fuqaha stipulate that Non-Leather socks suitable for Masah must be thick enough for them not to slide down without being tied down or wrapped around the legs (with elastic etc). The test is to make the socks stand up (on their own) and after using the socks for a while (washing etc.) we have taken a picture which shows that they still stand on their own (due to their thickness).
During Normal usage we found these socks to be much more comfortable then Leather socks and while performing strenuous activity (i.e. jogging, cycling, running, working out etc.) no blistering to the feet occurred (unlike Leather socks). They are extremely durable (and warm) and can be worn indoors without shoes.
However these socks are thicker then normal socks and some brothers found them to be a tight-fit in their existing shoes. Furthermore they are not adequately breathable, thus like the Leather socks your feet may smell if wore continuously for hours on end.
Sisters may find that ebay is the cheapest place for women sizes but men sizes are cheaper elsewhere on the Internet.
