moon

This page will Insha'Allah track moon sighting across various countries and will be updated monthly with the current and next month's moon sighting details and information.

Dhul-Qa'dah 1436 Calculations:

What is Odeh Visibility Criteria?

A new criterion for lunar crescent visibility has been established using 737 observations, almost half of them obtained by the Islamic Crescent Observation Project (ICOP). This criterion is based on two variables, viz. the topocentric arc of vision and the topocentric crescent width. The new model is able to predict the visibility of the lunar crescent both for naked eye and optically aided observations. From the database we found a Danjon limit of 6.4 degrees.

6 South Africa: South African Astronomical Observatory is currently predicting sighting on the 17th of July. HM Nautical Almanac Office is currently predicting sighting (A: Easily Visible) on the 17th of July in Cape Town thus it is possible to have Eid on Saturday the 18th of July 2015.

Note: HM Nautical Almanac Office are also predicting that a telescopic sighting of the new crescent moon may just be possible from the south-western tip of South Africa on July 16th. Odeh Criteria with a slightly lower Danjon Limit is also showing a slim possibility of sighting in South Africa on the 16th of July 2015.

Shawwal 1436 Announcements:

17JULY2015 (Eid):

1 Saudi Arabia: Moon is APPARENTLY SIGHTED so Eid is declared by High Judiciary Council of Saudi Arabia from Friday the 17th of July 2015. There was ZERO chance of Moon being sighted in Saudi Arabia!

2 Turkey: Moon Sigting is NOT ATTEMPTED but Eid is declared according to Türkiye Cumhuriyeti Diyanet İşleri Başkanlığıhas on Friday the 17th of July 2015

California Sighting accepted by Chicago Hilal:

Hilal Sighting Committee of North America rejected the sighting in California while Chicago Hilal accepted the sighting. There is a post on facebook page Hilal Sighting Committee of North America where 6 people are claiming to have sighted the Moon at Mount Tamalpais (CA), lets look at this location and analyse the data:

Location Latitude Longitude Time Sunset Moonset Moon Age (Sunset) HMNAO
Mount Tamalpais (CA) 37° 55′ 44.72″ N 122° 34′ 40.18″ W +7 20:32 20:51 26:08 Hours

Dr Salman Shaikh of Hilal Sighting is experienced and knows this field of Astronomical Sighting really well, it can be speculated as to why they investigated and rejected these sightings. Chicago Hilal on the other hands states that if a large number of Muslims testify to have sighted the moon, they reject scientific data and accept the sightings. It is upto Chicago Hilal to explain as to what how many Muslims in California sighted this moon.

Scientists and Scholars in America and Canada have rejected all sightings from North America (which includes Canada, Main land United States of America, Mexico and Caribbean Islands) and Chile from South America except for Chicago Hilal. Canadian Muslims (in particular) had a very thorough look at a lot of "reported" sightings (in depth), investigated and then rejected it and have Independently agreed with Hilal Sighting Committee of North America.

We have only speculated about Mount Tamalpais (CA) since it is mentioned on Hilal Sighting Committee of North America from facebook page.

This incident teaches us that we should know the criteria and methodology of each organisation (well). Chicago Hilal rejects scientific data in favour of mass sightings but people need to understand what the threshold of "mass sightings" is? How many people make "mass sighting"? There are loads of objects in the Sky at any given time and a large number of people can witness and testify to have sighted them, how do Ulama verify that it is actually the Moon?

Ulama in India/Pakistan have ruled that Astronomical Calculations can be used to eliminate impossible sightings, there is no other way in this day and age to discern true sightings from human error!

Hilal Sighting Committee of North America were aware of these sightings and rejected them.

Cresecent Watch were aware of these sightings and rejected them.

Crescent Committe were also aware of these sightings and rejected them.
